THIRTY-ONE

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Lucas Miller couldn’t remember much of anything. One second he was walking into a café, the next he was hit by a massive, powerful heat wave. Now, lying in a hospital bed and hooked up to an IV drip with pain medicine, anything more than a slow, short breath caused deep waves of nausea. For the first few hours, as he drifted in and out of consciousness, people in surgical gear came and went. At some point, a serious-looking doctor, an American, had told him what had happened. He had asked her about his brother William, but he’d already known the answer.

Still, the confirmation of his brother’s death had shaken him like nothing he’d ever experienced. Again, as he thought about his lost brother, his eyes teared up and his chest began to heave, causing him even more physical pain. He started to sob in a subdued, hopeless way.

Deep down, he felt responsible for William’s death. They had been playing a dangerous game. There was a reason why Mind-U had been paying them these huge salaries—three times what they used to pull at Politico. For the last month he and William been working on two high-profile but perilous stories. After acquiring UR Real News last year for an undisclosed amount of money, Mind-U’s board of directors had wanted to transform UR Real News from a dubious news platform into one of the most reliable sources of international news for emerging markets. One of the first things they had done had been to hire the Miller brothers—with stellar journalistic reputations in the US—who would bring legitimacy to the organization. Knowing they needed their first couple of investigative pieces to be huge, well-researched, and hard-hitting articles, Lucas and William had decided to tackle two trenchant subjects—money-laundering operations performed by private bankers in Switzerland, and the growing influence of Mexican drug cartels in US politics. As the brothers dug deeper into the reach of the cartels, they’d discovered that General Ramón Velásquez, Mexico’s former defense minister, had recently brokered an unprecedented truce among the top five drug cartels in Mexico to participate in a joint operation in the United States.

Proyecto de la Verdad. The Truth Project.

He and William had been in agreement that if anything were to happen to them, the Mexicans would be the ones to flex their muscles to scare them out, not the Swiss. From the get-go, they had operated under the assumption that the cartels had only a limited reach in Europe and that if he and his brother stayed away from Mexico and Central and South America, they should have been safe on this side of the Atlantic.

Wrong.

The fact that Raphaël Feldmann and William were dead indicated how badly they had misjudged the influence and power of the Mexican drug cartels—even in Europe. Still, Lucas couldn’t shake the feeling that he was missing something. The Swiss banks weren’t without teeth. They, too, had the resources to fight back.

Shit.

Either way, Lucas now realized that he and his brother had taken way too big a bite.
